Landscape-level synergies in agroecology
Sabina Asins-Velis (CSIC - Spanish National Research Council)
In an agroecological system, synergies at the landscape-level arise when the composition, connectivity and, of course, the management of different farms and natural habitats generate a cumulative benefit across the entire territory. Therefore, territorial governance with a multi-stakeholder approach, the management of interdependencies, the overcoming of administrative barriers and public participation are the key drivers to be implemented. We will present some of the areas of interest within the INTERMED project, which incorporates these aspects.
From Degraded Dryland to Living Farm: AmboKili’s Holistic Agroecology Approach in the Semi-Arid Greater Amboseli Ecosystem
Björn Steinmetz, Natasha Lencer and Tonny Ochieng (AmboKili Farm)
This Conversation will introduce AmboKili Farm, a regenerative agroecology farm in Kimana, Kenya, situated in the semi-arid Amboseli–Kilimanjaro–Tsavo wildlife landscape. The presentation will focus on AmboKili’s symbiotic farming approach, combining agroforestry, mosaic strip intercropping, refugial strips, aquaculture, underutilised species, self-pressed interlocking bricks, farmer/students training and many more into a holistic system designed as mutually reinforcing parts of one agroecosystem. Attention will be given to the practical realities of transformation: livestock-centred value systems, weak value chains, limited financing, limited water, the lack of suitable machinery, land fragmentation, pesticide exposure, food safety.
